Home

Back in 1999, my family and I moved into this old house. We discovered a small door in the attic and beyond it, a huge bird’s nest. Mixed in the straw, we came across an astonishing collection of Victorian photographs, souvenirs and letters. A love story emerged, and I’ve just published a book which tells that story. It’s called The Love of Dangerous Men. You can sample its opening chapter, explore its sources and illustrations and try to solve its enduring mysteries.

I’m an historian. You could say I specialise in the Victorian period, which is probably true, but I sometimes wander into the eighteenth and twentieth centuries. Stories and people are no respecters of boundaries.

At the moment, I’m working on a new book, The Woman in Question

And there’s a third book in the pipeline, Crazy.

I also give talks to lots of different groups.
